How to prepare for an internship interview

Internship interviews are about potential and attitude as much as knowledge. A little preparation goes a long way — here's a simple plan.

Your prep checklist

  1. Research the organisation

Know what they do, a recent project or product, and why you want to work there specifically.

  2. Re-read your own CV

Be ready to talk through every project and experience on it — interviewers ask about what you wrote.

  3. Prepare STAR examples

For behavioural questions, structure answers as Situation, Task, Action, Result. Prepare two or three flexible stories.

  4. Prepare questions to ask

Have two thoughtful questions ready — about the team, the work, or how success is measured.

Common internship interview questions

  • “Tell me about yourself” — a 60-second summary of your studies, interests and why this role.
  • “Tell me about a project you're proud of” — use a STAR example with a clear result.
  • “Why do you want this internship?” — connect your goals to what they offer.
  • “Tell me about a time you worked in a team” — pick a real group project or role.

Frequently asked questions

What is the STAR method?
A way to structure answers: describe the Situation, the Task, the Action you took, and the Result. It keeps stories clear and focused.
What should I ask at the end?
Ask about the team, the day-to-day work, or how they measure success — it shows genuine interest.
How does my CV help in the interview?
